Course Description

Like the Ragas of dawn, noon, sunset and midnight, our inner song changes from moment to moment.

Even for a sadhu on a remote mountain top, finding and watering the seeds of divine love can feel like a journey of a thousand lifetimes. But how much more so in the midst of our busy modern lives, with their seemingly endless demands and challenges? At times it seems like maintaining a devotional and loving attitude is a super-human and almost impossible task. However, with simple baby steps, plus the guidance of the ancient ones, we can re-learn to let God (or Goddess) be our personal 'Super Hero', surrendering to His grace, however it manifests, day after day.

A WELCOME MESSAGE FROM JAI

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?

Anyone interested in learning about the beauty and mystery that walks with those who embrace the path of Bhakti Yoga

WHAT IS BHAKTI YOGA?

Bhakti Yoga brings us into the world of mystery, a realm where the critical, discerning qualities of the intellect are powerless next to the vast ocean of feelings. In the journey of Bhakti we don't think about the goal, we only weep, laugh, cry, sing and dance with our Beloved, and if we pray for anything, it's simply for more devotion. Bhakti is about relationship; our stormy love affair with God. And Bhakti is about surrender; surrendering our personal heart into the Great Heart, offering our self will and all our efforts and actions to that vast Consciousness, to God. “Not my will but Thy will be done.”

IN THIS COURSE YOU WILL:

In Bhakti we don't usually think of what we can take - our focus is more often on what we can give. That being said, how can we give fully when our vessel feels empty? The hope is that each and every participant in this course will leave with a renewed sense of God's presence in their lives; with the heart fire of longing fully ablaze; with a connection to a sweet new community of friends and Bhaktas; and filled with equal measures of joy, peace and hope. And, perhaps most important, new insight into the practices that nourish and nurture the seed of love.

WHAT WILL YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THIS COURSE LOOK LIKE?

WEEK ONE: WAKING IN BHAKTI

(Re-entering the physical reality with intention and prayer.)

God knows where we go when we are sleeping!!! So often, my dreams are filled with fear and terror and yet my waking life is filled with so much joy and grace. How does one make that transition every morning? The first thing, before even getting out of bed, is to remember our divine connection and ask for guidance and protection.

  • Morning Mantras
  • Morning Ragas
  • Taking a bit out of the sun (like baby Hanuman)

WEEK TWO: WALKING IN BHAKTI

(Love People, Feed them and Remember God - one step at a time.)

The calls of the day are loud and demanding; responsibilities pull us right and left. How can we honor the world around us and our blessed life without ever letting go of the divine cord of love? Of course we are all humans and we forget God a thousand times a day but don't worry. Let's start with baby steps and, through patience and grace, begin to see all life as an expression of the divine play.

  • Midday Mantras
  • Midday Ragas
  • Having lunch with Ganesha
  • Being fed by the Divine Mother

WEEK THREE: BATHING IN BHAKTI

(After a long day of service, letting go into the divine current.)

At twilight time, as the sun sets into the waters, beautiful pastel colors are spread across the Earth. From a distance we see Radha and Krishna and their beloved friends approaching the Yamuna river for their sunset bath. Can we join them?

  • Sunset Mantras
  • Sunset Ragas
  • Beseeching the Gopis for the nectar of Divine Love and Passion

WEEK FOUR: DREAMING IN BHAKTI

(Setting sail into the unknown rivers of consciousness towards the north star of Ram’s name.)

When the night comes we can see the stars, and in the darkness we pray to rekindle our light of devotion. We offer all the experiences of our day to our Guru, to God, to the Divine.

Join me in singing a mantra that will carry us and envelop us through the uncharted landscape of our dreams.

  • Nighttime Mantras
  • Nighttime Ragas
  • Keeping the lantern lit
  • Enter the realm of deep sleep floating on the waves of Jai's lullaby

WHAT WILL YOU RECEIVE AS A PART OF THIS COURSE?

  • Weekly live stream online kirtan, discussion & Q&A
  • Four live kirtan recordings (one weekly)
  • Bhakti Files (written stories and reflections from Jai's Journal)
  • Interviews with Bhaktas from around the world sharing what Bhakti Yoga means to them

Jai Uttal is a Grammy nominated pioneer in the world music community. His eclectic east meets-west sound has put his music at the forefront of the world fusion movement. As a child in New York City, Jai’s home was filled with music. He began studying classical piano at the age of seven, and later learned to play old time banjo, harmonica, and guitar. His musical interests encompassed a wide variety of styles, and over the years he experimented with many forms of musical expression. During his visits to India, Jai met his Guru, Neem Karoli Baba, and spent time with many great beings of both the Hindu and Buddhist traditions. He became deeply absorbed in the practice of kirtan, the ancient yoga of chanting, or singing to God. This form of prayer became the core of his musical and spiritual life. Jai adds, “World music is music from everywhere. Music that creates bridges. Music that unites hearts and cultures. Music that brings peace.”
